Clerk's Office in Trouble

As early as next week, people seeking bail bonds for Orleans Parish Prison will have to wait until regular business hours for service.

The Criminal District Court Clerk, Arthur Morrell said that his office is no longer adequately funded to include staff working overnight. He blames this on Mayor Mitch Landrieu’s administration in what Morrell believes is a personal vendetta. The hiring freeze instituted has rendered the Clerk’s office almost unable to do their work.

If a client is attempting to get bail for someone after 11pm, they will have to wait until the following day. Even though there has been attrition from the Clerk’s office in the form of a death and a retirement, they are still not able to hire replacements. There are currently two dozen openings in the Clerk’s office.

Morrell said, “Sooner or later, if something isn’t done soon, we’re going to have some kind of crisis over here.”
